The overall quality of the image produced by a thermal transfer or direct thermal printer is determined by it's printhead DPI (dots per inch).
Standard barcode and text applications will typically use a 203 DPI printhead. As the complexity of a print job increases so must the DPI of the printhead.
Generally, most printer manufactures offer 203 DPI, 300 DPI and 600 DPI printheads. Some printer models may be converted from one DPI to another by simply replacing the printhead, however some printers will not accept higher DPI printheads than what the printer was originally designed.
